PURPOSE: The La Entrada STEM Fair prepares students for more complex projects and team work. The STEM Fair process includes posing questions, problem-solving, experimentation and communication. These are all skills our children need to be successful in our ever-changing world. The STEM Fair is a fun way to start mastering these skills.
DESCRIPTION: The STEM Fair is a fun event that allows students to work in groups of friends, to experiment, to make, to build and to present their ideas. STEM Projects can be either an engineering/Maker subject where the students invent or demonstrate a new technology, or in the more traditional science fields, where they develop and test a hypothesis. Project categories: chemistry, physics, material science, biological systems, behavioral science, earth-space-environmental science, engineering, and math/software. The afternoon and evening event showcase students’ science discoveries and achievements. You can find more detailed information about projects and “How To’s” here.
The 2017-2018 La Entrada STEM Fair occurs Thursday, February 8th, 2018. (Presentation set-up is the day prior, February 7th at 3pm.)
- 3pm: Interactive Afternoon Judging (student attendance is optional)
- 6:30pm: Student Showcase and Awards
There is an optional afternoon interactive judging event on the day of the STEM Fair. Here, judges enjoy the opportunity to ask questions and to hear the students’ perspective on their work. We enthusiastically recommend that someone from each team be there to discuss the poster.
All 5th – 8th grade award winners and honorable mentions from La Entrada are invited to the San Mateo County STEM Fair, an inspiring event held at the Hiller Aviation Museum in early March (www.stemfair.net). Some finalists from the San Mateo County STEM Fair are invited to participate in the California State Science Fair.
